The sixth Women’s Heritage Walk (WHW) came to close on February 4, 2020 as sixty participants from 24 nationalities hiked a 120 km journey from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain. The ‘Sand Sisters’ embarked on this challenging trek to recreate a historical, seasonal Emirati migration between the two cities that was done by tribes not so long ago. The Walk is organized by Jody Ballard and Asma Al Mutawa. Ballard, the founder, is an American author and clinical counselor and Al Mutawa is a prominent advocate of Emirati literature and culture who focuses on volunteer work that serves the community.
WHW not only highlights UAE culture and history, but also focuses on participant health and wellness, strength and leadership, and community building. This multi-faceted journey is often described by Walkers as a life-changing adventure. Since its inception in 2015, over 250 women have already participated, including many from other countries. This year, six women from abroad joined the Walk.
This experience was open to men for the first time ever this year. The pilot edition of the Men’s Heritage Walk took place between February 7 – 11, 2020, led by Emirati Hamad Ghanim. 15 men participated in the inaugural event. Like the women, the ‘Desert Brothers’ embarked on a five-day adventure filled with personal growth and cultural immersion.
Itani & Company has proudly been involved with this multi-faceted event for four years. We joined the Walk in 2015 and have grown together with it over the years. Our team has helped implement improved branding standards, strengthen sponsor relationships, and create an overall strategic approach to marketing. We congratulate the organizers on the success of yet another year.
